Hallux abducto valgus (bunion)
Hallux abducto valgus, commonly known as “bunion”, is a common foot deformity that mainly affects the big toe. This condition is characterized by a lateral deviation of the metatarsophalangeal joint, resulting in an abnormal position where the big toe points outwards while the metatarsal head tilts inwards. This leads to the formation of a painful bony bump on the inner side of the foot, often accompanied by inflammation and redness.
The bunion may be due to genetic factors, unsuitable footwear or instability of the metatarsophalangeal joint.
Symptoms include pain when walking, swelling around the affected joint, and sometimes corns or calluses.
Treatment may include changes to footwear, the use of special protectors to reduce pressure on the bump, and exercises to strengthen foot muscles. In more severe cases, surgery may be recommended to correct the deformity and relieve persistent symptoms.
