What is a Plantar Wart?
A plantar wart is a highly contagious viral skin infection, making it one of the most common viral skin infections. Caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), this condition affects the superficial layer of skin, the epidermis. It can appear on any part of the foot and may spread through self-inoculation. Typical plantar warts manifest as rapid growths of thick, localized calluses that can become painful under pressure or friction. This pain under the sole of the foot can alter gait and lead to compensations in walking patterns, potentially causing significant postural discomfort.
Risk Factors for Contamination:
- Increased foot sweating
- Walking barefoot in public places
- Presence of dermatitis (eczematous skin) or skin lesions following trauma
- Weakened immune system, which can result from conditions like cancer, HIV infection, etc., or from taking immunosuppressive medications. Warts in these individuals are often more resistant to treatment.
Treatment Options:
- Salicylic acid cream application: Daily application of a cream containing salicylic acid to the wart.
- Cantharone/Cantharone Plus application: Cantharone is a topical medication containing cantharidin, which helps destroy warts by causing local irritation.
- Bleomycin sulfate injection: Direct injection of bleomycin sulfate into the wart to target infected cells and destroy the wart.
- Efudex cream application:** Efudex (fluorouracil) is a topical medication that inhibits abnormal cell growth, often used to treat resistant warts.
These treatments can be prescribed and administered by your podiatrist at Clinique Mon Podiatre based on the severity and resistance of the plantar wart. Don’t delay in scheduling an appointment for effective treatment.
